This week has been very busy and full of exciting things, which has meant little time for sitting down and spending my free time blogging. We all feel the bloggers guilt sometimes don't we? I have it by the bucket load at the minute, so thought I'd give you a little update on what I've been up to.
Yesterday, Ed and I went to see another bunch of wedding venues- 2 duds and 1 absolute beauty. Cripps Barn (above) is a stone barn in the Cotswold's with huge outside gardens, a bonfire, forest, the option to camp and some very pretty interiors. We still have a few more to see but this is looking like the favourite so far, even if I think it's a bit too polished for me.One thing that has really got to me whilst looking for venues is the strictness of some of them. If I'm paying thousands of pounds in hire and catering costs I expect them to be a little more negotiable to the whims of a non-traditional bride. One of my wishes is to have a desert table, with cakes made by friends and family, macarons from Laduree and all of our favourite puddings. This is looking more and more impossible since most venues don't allow you to bring any outside food in which, in this age of austerity, seems particularly mean. The search continues for the perfect run-down barn in the south of England so if anyone has any hints or knows of any secret barns available, please let me know and save my nerves.

People have been going on about Pinterest for ages, but it was only after looking at the ridiculous amount of bookmarks I have on file that I decided to give it a go and, predictably, I'm now hooked. It's fantastic for bringing together all of my wedding inspiration so if you fancy having a browse and following me, or if you have a Pinterest account too, let me know. You can find mine here.
Instagram of the week. Still loving it:1. New Dorothy Perkins sale coat, £15 down from £69
2. Centrepoint on Tottenham Court Road, early morning.
3. Man with a golden pyramid on his head, Waterstones, Oxford Street. Amazingly, this guy is a cult London figure, which I found about after stumbling on this blog post here. I love London eccentrics.
4. My fawn bookend sadly lost it's partner in crime last weekend, smashing to the floor. If anyone spots any more, please let me know as he's very lonely.
5. My new Miista sparkly flats were bought courtesy of their ingenius Twitter promotion, whereby the higher the tweeter's Klout score, the higher the percentage discount was applied. I managed to bag the last of these for £14 down from £99!
6. A boy in a dog hat. More precisely, Ed in a dog hat bought for him by 'Santa'. Just for the lolz.
Finally, I was delighted to see that I'd been nominated for a Company Blog Award in the 'We Love Vintage' and 'Overall Winner' category. I'm under no illusions that there are far bigger and more popular blogs out there so I'm not asking you to vote for me, but I am asking you to vote because it would be fantastic to see a blogger I know picking up an award! You can vote here and as many times as you like so hop to it.
hehe, i always see that guy when i go to forbidden planet
ReplyDeleteI love those sparkly shoes :) My friend is planning her wedding at the moment and she's said the same about some venues not wanting you to take food in, it does seem crazy considering how much they charge! Hope you find somewhere soon, a dessert table sounds fabulous! x
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the nomination!
ReplyDeleteHow miserable of the wedding venue to let people bring food in. As you say, you're spending enough, surely they can grant you that.
Weddingy loveliness! Can't believe they wont allow you to bring your own puddings though, obviously just seeing £ signs! We were the same when getting married, the thought of the red carpet and master of ceremonies brought me out in sweats! Try unconventional places, our reception was at a gorgeous farm cafe that had never done weddings before, they were just glad of the custom and let us bring whatever we wanted, including our own booze! Have fun planning lovely :) p.s v jealous of the mustard coat! x
ReplyDeleteThat place looks absolutely gorgeous! Your idea of having a desert table sounds amazing, I hope you can get it! Those sparkly shoes are gorgeous too xx

I'm currently in the midst of venue finding, I think my job is slightly easier than yours as we have already decided we need a place in Brighton itself, much as I would love a Barn venue there are non in the centre of Brighton!
ReplyDeleteI've follwed you on pinterest, & have a little board of wedding pins, but I add to it every so often! When's your big day?!
I live in Buckinghamshire and there are lots of Venue barns here, but none are particularly run down!

P.s will def be voting for you!
Hope you have more luck with your wedding, we really didn't have a big do so I can't begin to imagine the hassle of trying to arrange it all!
ReplyDeleteHi, have you looked at Lains Barn in Oxfordshire...it's gorgeous x
ReplyDeleteI love your idea of crowns! I think that would be so amazing...and the glitter bunting..so magical. Good luck in finding the perfect venue. It was probably the hardest part (aside from dealing with the demands of family) of wedding planning for me.

Oooo gorgeous pinterest! Loving how wintery sunny your trip looked too! I can't believe wedding venues are being so nuts about you guys just having a dessert table I mean it's not a big deal most are fine with candy bars etx. I'd be tempted just to call it a candy bar from now on if any of the venues ask as I think that's completely unreasonable.

I’m so excited to follow your wedding progress Ellie, I know without a doubt your day will be magical in every way and the chosen venue will be you down to a T xxx
ReplyDeleteYour wedding ideas look lovely - I can believe venues being awkward though. It's a massive business but they don't want anything which isn't cookie cutter and mass produced. Stick to your guns, the dessert table sounds like a gorgeous idea.
ReplyDeleteI'm a bit obsessed with Pinterest (I'm Lakota). So many lovely ideas and so much inspiration on there but I have to admit I'm a sucker for the crazy stuff too. I have a series called 'Not Pinterested' on my blog with some of the more, erm, ill advised ideas!
The Cripps Barn looks beautiful. I actually got married in a barn here in the states and was able to bring outside food. I cant believe there are actually venues who wouldnt allow that. It doesnt seem fair at all.
ReplyDeleteOh my - I can't believe they won't let you take desserts in! That's rubbish, I had no idea they were so fussy! The location looks stunning though.
ReplyDeleteSo glad I just found your blog, it's fabulous!

Oh Ellie, sounds like your wedding planning is really taking off! Shame you can't take outside food in... what an odd rule. Hope you find somewhere soon! x
ReplyDeleteIts crazy how addictive pinterest is. I love it but so many hours have been lost to that site :(
ReplyDeleteLove the glittery shoes! :) And yay for having a front runner venue :) But god yes it's amazing how strict they are about things even though it's your day. That's why we ended up getting married in a non-wedding venue's garden... it made some things easier but some things much harder of course! You'll get there in the end though x
ReplyDeleteIf you don't mind a wee travel to East Anglia, Bateman Barn's is pretty good. I used to work there and we've done all sorts for weddings. There was one wedding that had a fancy dress hat competition and the groom wore an all purple velvet suit, with bowler hat of course, and another which was mexican themed and the bride and groom hired a mariachi band and the waiters and myself wore sombreros and felt moustaches. After following you for a while I think they might be worth a look. Great blog btw!
